2016: A wedding videographer’s year in review

2016 has been a fabulous year at Story Of Your Day – full of weddings, travel, awards and babies.

I’d like to start by thanking each and every couple whose wedding we have filmed this year from intimate weddings with just a few guests, destination weddings in Italy and France through to the most elaborate weddings with hundreds of guests.

It’s been an honour and a privilege to work with you all and be part of one of the most exciting days of your life.

Thanks goes to all the wonderful planners, venues and suppliers too, who make it all possible.

Filming for Story Of Your Day began in March with a wonderful wedding in Guiseley followed by a reception at The Devonshire Arms.

Then came a gorgeous wedding at one of my favourite venues in Yorkshire, East Riddlesden Hall. Emma and her team at the National Trust venue always put the most amazing day together for their couples.

Debbie and Matt were a lovely couple and one of my favourite parts of the day was when Debbie slipped into an evening dress and they ‘performed’ The Jive for their first dance.

Congratulations to both of them as they’re now expecting a baby in 2017.

The ‘wedding season’ got into full swing in June when I travelled to a little town near Poitiers in France to film Eve and Louis’ wedding weekend at Chateau St Julien.

Eve and Louis had invited their friends and family over from Wales to celebrate with them. It was an intimate wedding with about 45 guests and such an amazing weekend. It also involved some fun driving around the countryside in a 2CV with classic car fanatic, Louis.

Meanwhile back in the UK my team were filming another gorgeous wedding of Caroline and Charles in Bishopthorpe York.

I absolutely love this couple and the way they adored each other so deeply.

Wedding films 2016

There are just too many beautiful weddings to mention individually and some of those I filmed towards the end of the year have still to be published. But what I can say is that 2016 was a year for the most diverse and amazing weddings we’ve filmed to date.

From the beginning of June to the end of September, there wasn’t a weekend when either myself or my team, or both, were filming.

July was particularly busy as always and included the longest wedding celebration I filmed this year – Nisha and Hersh at Orchardleigh House Estate in Somerset.

This year has been my busiest yet and if I hadn’t taken the leap to take on an assistant I am not sure it would have been possible. Emma Allbones joined me in the new year as an apprentice and within weeks was not only working on all my social media but filming at my side at weddings.Claire Story Of Your Day

Claire (right) joined at the end of summer as client liaison, social media and marketing guru and all-round creative assistant.

Her being on board means that I can get on with the job of making beautiful films without being too distracted by the day to day running of the business.

In other news my camera director Ash got married at the end of August and I was thrilled when he asked me to film his and Becks’ wedding at Norwood Park.

To all the lovely bridal parties who always think he’s gorgeous, I’m afraid he’s now off the market. It was always going to be emotional filming his wedding but I was not expecting to cry while filming when he just couldn’t get his vows out without crying himself.

Ash and Becks are also expecting a baby in 2017.

Their announcement takes the total couples due to have babies from this year’s weddings to three. Congrats also to Katrina and Richard.

At the end of October my family and I moved to Switzerland for the winter ‘editing-season’. I’ve set my edit suite up with a view over the Jungfrau and North Face of the Eiger. Although I spend most of my time working on this summer’s wedding films, living here is inspirational and a screen break usually means sledging with the kids or skiing!

The end of year has been eventful too. Story Of Your Day won the accolade of Highly Commended in Yorkshire and the North East at The Wedding Industry Awards and I have just been short-listed as Business Woman of the Year in the Yorkshire Choice Awards. The winner will be announced in April.

If I had to choose one of my favourites, and this is purely on the stunning location as every single wedding I film is fabulous in its own right, it would be Rachael and James’s wedding in Sorrento. Italy was just stunning.

So cheers to 2016. I hope 2017 brings good fortune for all my couples, especially those expecting babies (and there are a few).

I am very much looking forward to 2017 and my first wedding at Suvretta House in St Moritz.
